The causes of war are many. First, there is the history of the territories, or France has lost territories like L'Alsace-Lorraine, which is ceded by France to Germany. Germany needs spaces, and wants its share of the pie. From there came the Triple Alliance consisting of the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy. Then there are the triplicate agreements that are made up of France, the United Kingdom and Russia.
An important event in 1914 was the attack on Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 by François Ferdinand, the future heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie Sotek, Duchess of Hohenberg. This day, the couple celebrated their fourteen years of marriage, and are in Bosni to witness imperial army manoeuvres in the vicinity of Sarajevo. They also mark the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo Plje in 1389. On the way home, during the procession, an attack was thwarted, but the couple escaped but injured nine others. François Ferdinand then asked his driver to stop at the hopital to see the injured, but he did not understand and stopped a little further. At this point Gavrilo Philip, a Bosni Serbian minor and nationalist, one metre from the couple, fired five bullets and killed the couple. He claimed the independence of all the southern Slovaks. He avoided the death penalty, but was imprisoned in the fortress of Theresienstadt (Czech Republic).
